Paragraph and Sentence Basics
Description: No Child Left Behind school reform legislation requires student improvement in reading and writing to a standard referred to as Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP. To earn AYP in English language arts, students must reach targeted levels on both the state’s reading and writing assessments. Unfortunately, teachers, typically, focus their instruction on either reading instruction or writing instruction as opposed to focusing on both language arts at the same time. As a result, students may improve in one of the areas but represent little gain in the other, a situation that many schools are facing at this time.
Teaching students to write and then using the components of writing to help them read better takes advantage of the common and predictable features of expository and narrative text. Because awareness of text and sensitivity to its structure promotes meaning construction and, therefore, reading and writing competence, teachers can help students understand reading and writing--simultaneously--as they explore learning and complete learning activities.
