Office Writing Basics: Paragraphs That Pack A Punch!

Office Writing Basics: Paragraphs That Pack A Punch!

This series of Writing Seminars was designed with professional employees in mind, specifically those who, through the routine course of transacting the business of the institutions for which they work, rely on written communication like letters, memos, reports, summaries, etc. These include clerical, managerial, or administrative staff persons.

Understanding that such professionals' schedules are hectic and the demands on their time endless, the seminar provides them with a relevant, effective sojourn into writing development that takes place in integrative and interactive activities that are group-oriented and research-based and that take place over the course of one month in two lively and chock full of learning seminars.

Participants learn to connect the dots in these sessions as these apply to the sentence and the paragraph; thus, they emerge strengthened and more confident that they can communicate via letters, memos, reports, or other written messages correctly, appropriately, and with the style and grace required given their audience and their purpose for writing.

Organization of Writing Seminars

Each seminar is customized to meet the needs of the clients; however, the typical workshop is 6.5 hours duration, including a 30minute lunch break and two 10 minute breaks, morning and afternoon.

Relevance of Writing Seminars

In both seminars, participants will be exposed to products created by writers similar to themselves in the context of conducting business and get the chance to examine these in the context of the rules and conventions as they make sense of these within workshop activities. As a result, participants will construct (with their colleagues) the meanings necessary to communicate effectively via written text and follow the conventions associated with good writing. After each session, participants will exit the experience more confident in their ability to apply complex and abstract grammar rules and conventions to create clearly worded and essentially correct documents. The sessions conclude by providing participants guidance in self-development activities to reinforce their learning over the course of the month following the first seminar.

Self-Study Materials

Participants will receive folder filled with rules, conventions, examples, and practice activities to aid their mastery of writing basics and that reveals current best practices in letter and memo writing.

Taken together, the seminars provide a powerful mechanism for improving office communication and for promoting standard communication among professionals within the department, unit, facility, or office, system-wide. Further, the seminars provide staff with the foundational element upon which managers can help build excellent technical writing skills (across the institution) in subsequent professional development initiatives. More than these, though, they will result in a more skilled segment of the workforce, one able to represent written text in ways that reflect standard usage and conventions and thereby successful participants will represent the institution more favorably via the written correspondence produced by the same.
