Description: No Child Left Behind legislation (Reading First) provides for a national strategy to ensure student competence in grade level standards in English language arts. One main feature of Reading First is the daily 90 minute literacy block. Implemented correctly, the 90 minute literacy block can be a strategic school wide tool to strengthen student performance in the English language arts. This seminar is designed to assist elementary teachers in understanding and implementing the 90 minute literacy block. In an interactive, cooperative group learning format, and stimulating12 hour seminar, elementary teachers learn to understand better the importance of the 90 minute literacy block, how to structure learning within the 90 minute literacy block, how to create a customized school-wide framework for implementation of the 90 minute literacy block; teachers enhance their understanding of their roles in implementing grade level standards and expectations and in using commercially adopted learning materials (Open Court, Houghton Miflin, Harcourt Brace, SRA, for example). This seminar will demonstrate how to use textbook materials adopted by the district and integrate these into the 90 minute literacy block across all specified grade levels.
